"Field Studies - Or, Ten Things Chris knows about Karl Urban
- Chris jokes in interviews about how he pinned the letter from William Shatner wishing him luck in playing Captain Kirk on the fridge, but it didn’t even make it onto the fridge – it went straight into a photo frame. When he and Karl moved in together, it had its own box, was surrounded by bubble wrap, and was the first thing to be hung on the wall.
- He loves to experiment when he cooks and bakes – sometimes, that leads to things like pecan and mixed fruit flapjacks - which are now demanded by the kids (and Karl) at every opportunity – or sinful roast lamb with rosemary, honey and all the trimmings. Other times, it leads to Karl, Hunter and Indy eating with a fixed grin on their faces as they try to stomach the … thing that has escaped the oven, all the while aware of Chris’ beaming smile on his face.
- Chris isn’t allowed to watch the original Star Trek at the same time as Karl, due to his constant sniggering at the bad special effects and cheesy lines … however he’ll watch the Animated Series over and over again with a passion close to religion. Karl still hasn’t worked out why.
- When Chris was fourteen, he was fed up of being the only person in his class without a tan, so he took drastic measures and used his mum’s fake tan that she kept in the bathroom. Unfortunately he didn’t follow the instructions, turned bright orange, and was known as the Tango Man through the rest of high school. His mum still sniggers whenever the subject is brought up.
- He wore a hole in the carpet while waiting to meet Natalie as the “ex-wife” not “the wife”, and only stopped moving when he bolted to the bathroom to throw up the last of his breakfast that he’d barely eaten, so worried was he that Natalie would just kill him there and then, that the kids would hate him for ever and ever, that Karl would realise what a stupid mistake he made when starting the relationship with Chris. When Natalie and Chris came face to face, the first thing she did was give Chris a hug, and proceed to engage him in conversation about Karl’s geekiness. The sighs of relief from all parties echoed throughout the room.
- He’s read thousands of books, literally, what with his English degree and his love of reading as he grew up. He can quote extensively from “Dracula”, “French Lieutenant’s Woman”, “The Return of the Native”, “Regeneration”, “Birdsong”, “Catch-22”, “Jane Eyre”, “Wuthering Heights” and most of Sassoon’s “War Poems”, but his guilty pleasure is to curl up in bed with a cup of coffee, biscuits, and Garner’s “Politically Correct Bedtime Stories” – as Karl works away in the kitchen, he can hear Chris giggling over the porcinistas in “The three little pigs”.
- He teases Karl about his weird taste in music, but Karl has photographic evidence of Chris dancing along to the Backstreet Boys, and uses the threat of exposure to make Chris shut up whenever he starts teasing Karl about the fact that he has Disney songs and Britney Spears on his laptop.
- He lives in fear for the days that Simon and Karl meet up for drinks – he hasn’t managed to blank the memories of last time from his mind yet.
- He’s watched all versions of “The Lord of the Rings” at least five times each - including the animated version, owns copies of all the books, avidly reads every titbit about filming that he can find, constantly badgers Karl for his memories of filming, and was first in line to pick up tickets to see Peter Jackson’s work in the cinema. When Karl and Chris bumped into Peter Jackson himself at an awards night, Karl and Peter chatted quite happily away for ten minutes or so, and when they parted, Peter shook Chris’ hand and wished him luck. Karl started to walk away; noticed Chris wasn’t next to him, and turned back to see Chris staring at his hand in shock. Un-nerved, Karl asked him if he was okay. The reply Karl got was a dazed “I am never washing this hand again …”
- He may be a geek, but he’s Karl’s geek. And don’t you forget it.

I think he's bound to be a little bit of a geek, not as much as Karl, but I will admit that this is based in the same place as my "Don't stop the music" piece ... if necessary, magic hand-wave it all! :P

I MIGHT be writing a sort of AU in which Jim was in a Disney boy-band TV series before he got shipped off to Tarsus. Which would, natch, feature BSB and NKOTB and Gaga songs.
