Part 5/6

Jim turned at the door, and looked back at Bones.

“While I’m away … will … you write? I mean, you don’t have to, it’s only if you haven’t got anything else to do, but -”

Bones held up his hand, and smiled.

“Yeah … I’ll write. Just … be careful. I don’t fancy having you on my operating table.”

Jim smiled back, hoisted his bag onto his back, and walked out the door. Swinging his leg over the bike, he settled into the seat, checking the instruments in front of him. He pulled on the gloves, and looked at Bones, who was standing in the doorway, looking at him with some indescribable look on his face. Jim paused, and looked at the small bear he had tied into the corner of the bike to make sure it didn’t go anywhere. He looked back at Bones, framed in the doorway, the flowers starting to wilt, and the leaves starting to turn gold and red, and stopped moving. He looked back at the bear, and quickly got off the bike, untying it, and walking over to Bones.

“Here, if you keep hold of him, then you know I’ll come back to get it.”

“Jim, I can’t. It’s yours, I can’t possibly -”

Jim put a finger to Bones’ lips, and put the small bear into his hands.

“Think of it like … a promise, Bones. I’ll always come back to you.”

Bones raised his eyebrow slightly even as his hand closed around the bear’s middle, a finger softly stroking the fur that bunched through his fingers.

“Even though you’re going to be surrounded by the wonderful women in Yorkshire? I highly doubt you’ll remember a crotchety old doctor, Jim.”

“Bones … I … don’t … want … anyone else. Not if it means … not having … well, you. Even your crotchety bear behaviour when you don’t get caffeine in the morning.” Jim moved closer, and wrapped his fingers round Bones’, both of them standing there silent, holding the bear.

Bones smiled slowly, and cleared his throat.

“Well, okay then.”

“Good.”

“Do you always have to get the last word, Jim?”

Jim smiled, and quickly checked the area. No one was around. He leant forward, and brushed his lips over Bones’ slowly, lingering on the corners of his lips, savouring the feel, the taste, the smell of Bones. He felt Bones sigh, and his fingers grip Jim’s as Bones responded. Jim pulled back, and smiled.

“Yep … I do, Bones, I do.”

Bones shook his head and laughed.

“I guessed … now go on, if you don’t get to Church Fenton tonight, you’ll be in trouble and you know it. Try to start off on the right foot with the higher-ups for once?”

Jim grinned, walking back to his bike and swinging himself on, putting on his helmet.

“But that’s no fun, Bones!”

“Maybe not fun, but less likely to result in fights!”

“See above point on it being no fun, Bones!”

Jim started the bike, and let the rumbling engine settle, filling the autumn sky with petrol and roaring. He removed the bike stand, and got ready to go. One last look back and he smiled softly, touching the side of his helmet with a two-fingered salute. Bones smiled back, and did the same, holding the bear close to him.

As Jim turned back to face the road, he started off, the bike roaring like his Spitfire, and he grinned. He took one last look back at Bones who was still standing in the doorway, a soft smile on his lips, and Jim knew that come hell or high water, he’d be back. After everything, he’d be back.
